The Penticton Farmers Markets are coming to the Shatford Centre on Nov. 4 and 18 and Dec. 2 and 16. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Parking is available at Penticton Secondary School.

Thomas Tumbach was part of Shatford’s visioning team and he envisioned having a kitchen and working with the farmers and that is exactly what happened. Check out Thomas’s Local Motive Organic Delivery enterprise at localmotive.ca.

“As our growing season quickly winds down, here are some of Thomas’s thoughts on the vocation of being a farmer, food for thought!

I have an old friend, who’s nearly 67
He’s been farming since 30, nearly at the ending
And instead of retiring, which he truly deserves
he carries a debt, with no land in reserve
But he has a heart that is truly debt free
You can taste its sweetness in the fruits from his tree

Cause being a farmer takes everything that you’ve got
All your years, all your tears, whether you like it or not
And once you’ve committed, there’s no turning back
You’re a farmer, a feeder and the land is your lot
So follow the seasons, and follow your heart
You planted that seed and it was only the start

I have a young friend, who’s nearly 42
He spent his whole life looking for something to do
then he found his vocation, growing food is his passion
He does his best to farm in some kind of fashion
No machines, no land, can’t even predict the weather
But he works like two oxen, and will pull it together

Cause being a farmer takes everything that you’ve got
All your years, all your tears, whether you like it or not
And once you’ve committed, there’s no turning back
You’re a farmer, a feeder and the land is your lot
So follow the seasons, and follow your heart
You planted that seed and it was only the start

I have a sweet daughter, she’s just turning 12
Since she was a toddler, in the garden she delved
She’s got a green thumb, and she farms in my shadow
Makes my hardest days easy, like my trusty wheelbarrow
Transplanting and picking, she even pulls weeds
I know that someday she’ll be planting all my seeds

Cause being a farmer takes everything that you’ve got
All your years, all your tears, whether you like it or not
And once you’ve committed, there’s no turning back
You’re a farmer, a feeder and the land is your lot
So follow the seasons, and follow your heart
You planted that seed and it was only the start
